A super-strong contingent of 30+ Yabbies took part in this year’s Junior State Championships (JSC), held in Bendigo (girls) and Shepparton (boys) on July 1-4.
Our talented young Yabbies were well-represented in teams across each age group within the North West Metro Tigers representative zone, one of 10 zones competing at the four-day event. It’s easily the biggest group of YVHC players selected into the Tigers’ rep teams in recent years – and perhaps some sort of all-time record! Many others from the YVHC community also made the trip to regional Victoria, either as coaches, umpires, team managers, officials, commentators or supporters.
Despite the early-morning fog and icy-cold weather across the four-day event, the terrific hockey, comraderie and country hospitality made the JSC’s rare visit to regional Victoria a memorable and rewarding one for all involved. A special well done to our YVHC players, who did us proud across dozens of matches, as well as all of the parents for their support.
After the cancellation of last year’s JSC due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was hard to predict where our teams would finish up in the competition. But it was our U13 Boys team, with no less than 9 YVHC players in their team, that led the way, making the Gold Medal match after a dominant showing throughout the event. Despite going down in an exciting final against the Red Devils 3-1, the U13 Boys finished the event as the highest-ranked Tigers team – a great result.
Our U18 Boys team also came home with a Bronze Medal, while the U18 Girls team just missed a medal, finishing a very credible fourth. All of the other Tigers Boys and Girls teams finished no lower than seventh.
